Arizona's Wildcats have clawed their way to the top! The latest AP Top 25 men's college basketball poll has crowned Arizona as the new No. 1 team, a testament to their flawless start to the season. Arizona's ascent to the top spot is a result of their impressive performance, including a series of victories against ranked opponents. Their dominant win over Auburn last weekend was a significant factor in their rise. This is a big deal for the Wildcats, marking their first No. 1 ranking since December 11, 2023, and only the third time since the 2013-14 season.
Meanwhile, Purdue, who held the No. 1 position for the past three weeks, has slipped to sixth place following a home loss to Iowa State. The poll has seen a major shakeup, with only a couple of teams maintaining their previous rankings. Arizona secured the top spot with 33 of 60 first-place votes from a national media panel, edging out No. 2 Michigan, who received 19 first-place votes.
"Obviously it’s nothing you shy away from," said Wildcats coach Tommy Lloyd, acknowledging the significance of the No. 1 ranking. "You know, you’re at Arizona. The big stage. It’s part of being at a program like this. But we have bigger things on our mind."
Michigan's rise to No. 2 is their highest ranking since March 2021. Duke is at No. 3, and Iowa State, after their big win against Purdue, jumped six spots to No. 4, earning a first-place vote. Iowa State has never been ranked No. 1 in the AP poll era, which began in the 1948-49 season.
"They stole our spirit," Purdue coach Matt Painter said of Iowa State, whose team suffered a record-tying defeat at home. "Our reason for having a high frustration level was them. They’re damn good. They took us to the woodshed."
UConn remains at No. 5 after defeating Kansas. The top 10 is rounded out by Houston at seventh, Gonzaga at eighth, Michigan State at ninth, and BYU at tenth. Further down the rankings, Louisville dropped to No. 11, and Vanderbilt remains the only unbeaten team in the SEC.
But here's where it gets controversial... Nebraska, currently No. 23, is off to a stellar start, with a 9-0 record for only the third time in school history, and they have won 13 straight games dating back to last season. This impressive streak has propelled them to their best ranking since the 2014-15 season.
Arkansas, after a shaky start, has climbed to No. 17. Tennessee, however, has dropped seven spots to No. 20. Purdue and Louisville each fell five spots. Nebraska and Virginia have made their poll debuts, while UCLA has also returned to the rankings.
And this is the part most people miss... The Big 12, Big Ten, and SEC are leading the way with six ranked teams each. The Big 12 boasts the No. 1 team and four teams in the top 10, while the Big Ten has three. The ACC has four ranked teams, the Big East two, and the West Coast one.
