Derbyshire Village's 7-Week Traffic Nightmare: What You Need to Know (2026)

Get ready for a seven-week traffic 'nightmare' in a Derbyshire village! Drivers are being warned to brace themselves as a significant road closure is about to descend upon Walton-on-Trent, near Swadlincote. This isn't just a minor inconvenience; it's a prolonged disruption that locals and commuters alike are already anticipating with dread.

Here's the breakdown: Walton Main Street is set to be completely closed for a substantial seven-week period, kicking off today, Monday, February 16th. The good news, if you can call it that, is that the works are slated to conclude and the road should reopen by April 3rd. The primary reason for this extensive closure? To facilitate crucial road connections for the new Walton Bypass and bridge project. Imagine the scale of the infrastructure being put in place!

But here's where it gets controversial... While the need for improved infrastructure is undeniable, the impact on daily life for residents and businesses is a major concern. Councillor Amy Wheelton has been a vocal advocate for the community, managing to successfully lobby for a reduction in the closure duration from a staggering nine weeks down to the current seven. She also ensured that potholes on the designated diversion routes have been addressed, a small but significant comfort for those who must navigate them.

And this is the part most people miss... To further mitigate the chaos, an emergency speed restriction of 30mph has been implemented along the diversion routes. This applies to Rosliston Road (Walton to Rosliston), Burton Road, Rosliston Road South, and the road connecting Rosliston to Drakelow. Furthermore, in an effort to minimize overall disruption, other planned works, including two gas mains replacement projects, have been either cancelled or postponed during this seven-week window. It's a delicate balancing act between progress and present-day inconvenience.

What do you think? Is a seven-week closure a necessary evil for long-term improvement, or is the disruption to the community too great? Share your thoughts in the comments below – we'd love to hear if you agree with Councillor Wheelton's assessment of a 'nightmare' or if you see the bigger picture. Let's discuss!
