Insurance Denials and Cancer Treatment: A Patient's Struggle (2026)

Struggling with Cancer Treatment: A Man's Insurance Battle

A man battling cancer is frustrated by his insurance company's limitations on his treatment options. Andrew Dilldine, a 47-year-old resident of Huber Heights, has been fighting cancer for years, including MF lymphoma and carcinoid cancer. His condition has led to multiple health complications, such as acute kidney injury, Bell's Palsy, and sepsis.

In 2016, Dilldine's medical team devised a treatment plan involving IV fluids administered through a chest port. This plan allowed nurses to visit his home regularly to change his dressing and his port. However, his Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance policy only covers 100 visits annually.

Since 2024, Dilldine has been battling with his insurance provider to extend these visits, but to no avail. As a result, he has had to miss crucial treatments, causing him immense stress and frustration.

"I'm tired of fighting," he says. "I just want to focus on beating cancer, but I'm spending hours on the phone, worried about whether my insurance will cover my treatments and when the next denial will come."

The National Cancer Institute acknowledges that cancer care costs can vary. Dilldine has spent approximately $15,000 on treatments not covered by his insurance, resorting to selling valuable possessions, including his son's Hot Wheels collection, to cover the expenses.

News Center 7 contacted Blue Cross Blue Shield, which responded, "We understand Mr. Dilldine's challenges and remain dedicated to supporting his care needs. We aim to provide coverage according to his plan benefits while addressing his concerns. We are available to assist Mr. Dilldine in understanding his benefits."

Despite the insurance hurdles, Dilldine remains hopeful. He is determined to find a solution to extend his at-home visits and continue his fight against cancer.

This story highlights the challenges faced by cancer patients in accessing adequate treatment due to insurance limitations, emphasizing the need for improved healthcare coverage and support systems.
