Iron Lung's journey to the silver screen is a tale of defying the odds, even if the film itself doesn't quite live up to the hype.
The movie, 'Iron Lung', offers a few thrilling moments but ultimately fails to leave a lasting impression. With a modest budget, this horror flick showcases some creative concepts, effectively building tension, but it falls short of delivering genuine scares. However, its significance lies in what it symbolizes. In an era where cinemas are dominated by blockbuster franchises and smaller films struggle to find their footing, 'Iron Lung' defied expectations by grossing over $20 million at the box office without the support of a major studio. Its success was largely fueled by the power of YouTube.
The circumstances surrounding 'Iron Lung' are quite extraordinary. Based on the 2022 indie horror game by solo developer David Szymanski, the film is written, directed, and executive produced by Mark Fischbach, the renowned YouTube personality Markiplier. Markiplier's channel is famous for his let's play videos, especially those featuring indie horror games, which have garnered him an impressive 40 million subscribers. In 2022, Markiplier's playthrough of the game garnered over 14 million views, and a year later, a trailer for the movie was released, starring Markiplier himself. Now, the film has hit theaters as Markiplier's debut feature, with him both leading the creative process and starring in it, a remarkable achievement for a movie with a single on-screen protagonist.
The plot of 'Iron Lung' is rather unconventional: set in a dystopian future, a convict (played by Markiplier) is sealed inside an experimental submarine as punishment. His mission is to explore a moon's ocean, which happens to be entirely composed of blood, in search of something mysterious. The convict's only view of the outside world is through a low-resolution underwater camera. Thus, the audience experiences the film primarily through Markiplier's character swearing, muttering, and flipping switches, gradually descending into madness within the confines of the submarine. While the film initially succeeds in building tension, it eventually becomes tedious and repetitive as the story unfolds. One of the most pivotal scenes involves a lengthy sequence of map drawing.
'Iron Lung' is unmistakably influenced by video games. It employs various game-like elements: a guide character who is primarily a voice over a speaker, diegetic storytelling through instruction manuals and displays showing the submarine's depth and oxygen levels, audio logs revealing crucial plot points, and even a gear upgrade mid-film. The cast includes Troy Baker, a prolific voice actor in numerous video games. While these elements work well in interactive games, they feel awkwardly implemented in a live-action film. Nevertheless, as a debut feature, 'Iron Lung' demonstrates potential, even if it doesn't entirely succeed.
Despite its flaws, 'Iron Lung' is an undeniable success. With a reported budget of only $3 million, it secured the second spot at the US box office over the weekend, earning over $18 million domestically, and has since surpassed $20 million globally. This achievement placed it just behind Sam Raimi's 'Send Help', a 20th Century Studios production, and far ahead of Amazon's costly documentary about Melania Trump.
The transition of YouTubers into other creative fields is not unprecedented, even in Hollywood. Danny and Michael Philippou, for instance, successfully transitioned from YouTube to release two acclaimed horror films, 'Talk to Me' and 'Bring Her Back', both of which were financially successful. However, these films had the backing of the prestigious A24 studio, whereas 'Iron Lung' is a more grassroots endeavor. Markiplier leveraged his dedicated fan base to directly approach theaters, resulting in the film being shown on over 3,000 screens, despite lacking a distributor. He transformed his online popularity into a box office hit in a different medium.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Markiplier revealed that the demand for the film was so high that some believed bots were involved. He also acknowledged the stigma against YouTube content creators in the film industry and expressed his desire for 'Iron Lung' to help break down that barrier.
While this success may inspire other prominent YouTubers to venture into filmmaking, it's not a straightforward path for filmmakers or studios to emulate. Aspiring horror directors can't simply rely on building a massive YouTube following to guarantee their projects' success, and there's a vast difference between managing a YouTube channel and creating a blockbuster.
Nevertheless, the 'Iron Lung' phenomenon demonstrates the influence of an existing online audience and how online success can challenge even the most established industries, such as Hollywood, directly competing with giants like Disney and Amazon. With more films like 'Iron Lung', the stigma will fade, potentially leading to a transformation in the cinematic landscape.
