Imagine stepping into the whimsical world of Disney's Magic Kingdom, where the beloved Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin is getting a fresh makeover that promises to elevate your experience like never before. This exciting transformation was recently unveiled on the popular morning show, Good Morning America, providing fans with a glimpse into the exhilarating changes awaiting them at this iconic attraction.
In an engaging segment, viewers were treated to exclusive footage from within the revamped ride, alongside an insightful interview featuring Wyatt Winter, the Executive Producer from Walt Disney Imagineering. Winter passionately described the newly enhanced opening sequence, which brilliantly sets the stage for the intergalactic mission ahead. "What’s new here today is actually the scene that's right here behind me, and you see our alien friends opening that airlock so we can head out into space and start our battle with Emperor Zurg," Winter explained. "Thankfully, we won't have to face Zurg alone. We're going to see Buzz Lightyear for the first time, join you in that battle."
Among the notable updates is the introduction of Buddy, an innovative support robot designed collaboratively by Walt Disney Imagineering and Pixar. Buddy plays a crucial role by conducting system checks and providing enthusiastic encouragement to aspiring Space Rangers before they embark on their thrilling journey through space.
Shay, a Visual Effects Designer at Walt Disney Imagineering, also shared insights about the cutting-edge projection technology being utilized in the hyperspace tunnel sequence. "We are in a scene called hyperspace, but we are installing brand new media for this refreshed version of Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin," Shay remarked. "We are adding so many new elements to this scene. We're introducing Buzz for the first time. Zurg is out there in hyperspace, releasing all of these space mines, which we get to score more points by firing on."
This refurbishment is not just about visual enhancements; it also addresses the technical challenges of animating within a tunnel environment. Tasha from Pixar reflected on her journey, saying, "When I first started at Pixar, I was an animator on the films, and one of the first was Toy Story 2, and so I have a real fondness for the Toy Story characters. It's kind of like coming back to old friends every time we get to animate them again. We're actually projecting onto a tunnel. We're not used to animating something in a tunnel, so we actually created a grid that we could animate on that's all flattened out, but then when we get it projected, it all looks normal."
Additionally, guests will notice redesigned vehicles inspired by Star Command, now featuring onboard screens for real-time scoring. The original fixed blasters have been replaced with handheld versions that enhance aiming capabilities with added vibration and sound effects, along with an always-on laser to assist players in tracking their shots.
Interactive targets scattered throughout the ride have also received an upgrade; they now light up and react when hit, providing clearer feedback during gameplay, making the experience even more engaging and enjoyable.
Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin has been closed since August 2025 to facilitate these exciting upgrades and is anticipated to reopen in spring 2026, although Disney has yet to specify an exact date.
