The OU Sooners softball team unleashed an offensive explosion, leaving opponents in the dust with a staggering display of power hitting! It's one thing to anticipate a strong showing from OU softball, but witnessing it firsthand is a whole different ballgame. On Friday alone, the Sooners collectively blasted 35 runs across two games, a truly remarkable feat that set the tone for the weekend.
In their afternoon matchup against New Mexico State, the Sooners secured a dominant 18-6 run-rule victory that concluded after just five innings. This offensive onslaught was fueled by the potent bats of Gabbie Garcia and Ailana Agbayani, who together drove in an impressive 11 RBIs. Garcia, who had already contributed a home run earlier in the game, was part of a massive six-run fifth inning where every single run was scored via a long ball. This power surge wasn't limited to Garcia; freshmen Kendall Wells and sophomore Tia Milloy also joined the home run parade, showcasing the depth of OU's offensive talent. Both Garcia and Agbayani were incredibly consistent at the plate, each racking up three hits.
While the offense was firing on all cylinders, the pitching saw a bit of a mixed bag. Kierston Deal and Audrey Lowry had somewhat uneven outings, with each allowing three runs. However, Lowry managed to secure her fourth win of the season, coming in as a reliever for Deal in the second inning. The Sooners demonstrated their consistent scoring ability, putting runs on the board in the first (4 runs), third (8 runs), and fifth (6 runs) innings, propelling their season record to a solid 5-1.
But here's where it gets truly astonishing: In their second game of the day against Montana, the Sooners achieved a resounding 17-0 victory, also ending in five innings. This game was a showcase for Isabela Emerling, who absolutely exploded at the plate, hitting an incredible three home runs! This performance was a clear message to coach Patty Gasso about her readiness. It's going to be a tough competition for playing time, especially with the stellar start freshman catcher Kendall Wells has had to her collegiate career. And yes, Wells also went deep in this game, driving in two runs. Emerling's home runs were a solo shot, a two-run blast, and a three-run bomb, contributing significantly to the team's eight home runs in this single game – the most for OU since 2021! Other Sooners joining the home run fest included Sydney Barker, Ailana Agbayani, Kai Minor, and Kasidi Pickering.
OU, now 4-1 on the season, put up six runs in the second inning and another six runs in the fifth, leaving no doubt in the first of their five games scheduled for the weekend in Las Cruces, N.M.
In the circle, freshman Miali Guachino made her first start for OU and delivered a stellar performance. She pitched 4.1 innings, allowing no hits, issuing one walk, and striking out six batters to earn her inaugural win as a Sooner. Berkley Zache came in to close out the game, working through a jam to secure the final outs.
And this is the part most people miss: While the offensive fireworks are exciting, the sheer dominance shown by multiple players, particularly Emerling's three home runs in one game, raises questions about the team's depth and potential.
