The Tamale Islamic Science Senior High School (TISSHS) boys' dormitory has been given a much-needed makeover, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and the school administration. But this renovation project is more than just a physical upgrade; it's a symbol of the school's commitment to providing a safe and conducive learning environment for its students, despite facing significant infrastructure challenges.
A Home Away from Home
The boys' dormitory, like many others in the country, has been a source of concern for the school's leadership. Headmaster Alhaji Mohammed Issifu highlighted the persistent infrastructure deficits, including inadequate dormitory facilities, limited classrooms and laboratories, and a lack of essential amenities like a dining hall, assembly hall, and administrative block. These issues have not only impacted the comfort of the students but also their academic performance.
A Storm's Impact
The situation took a turn for the worse in June 2025 when a rainstorm severely damaged the boys' dormitory, exacerbating the accommodation challenges. The students were exposed to harsh living conditions, which prompted the CPA to step in and fully fund a major renovation of the facility.
A Collaborative Effort
The Vice Chairman of the CPA, Mr. Charles Ayendago, emphasized the importance of this intervention, stating that the deteriorated condition of the dormitory had become a major concern for parents and affected students' comfort and learning. The renovation, which cost a total of GH₵184,742, was funded through contributions by parents, with support from the school management. The project was carried out in three phases over two and a half months, addressing roofing, electrical, masonry, door repairs, painting, and finishing works.
A Testimony to Collaboration
Mr. Ayendago described the project as a testament to effective collaboration between parents and school authorities, urging the management to ensure proper maintenance of the facility. He also emphasized the importance of students protecting school property, noting that it was an investment in their own future. The renovation has not only improved the living conditions for the students but also serves as a strong example of community-led school development.
A Call to Action
The Deputy Northern Regional Director of Education, Mr. Kingsley Adzraku, commended the CPA and school management for spearheading the refurbishment. However, he also highlighted the need for continued investment in school infrastructure, urging the community to remain vigilant and proactive in addressing the challenges faced by the school. As the students move into their newly renovated dormitory, they are reminded of the importance of responsible usage and the need to protect this valuable asset.
But here's where it gets controversial... While the renovation is a significant step forward, it raises questions about the long-term sustainability of such projects. How can schools balance the need for immediate infrastructure improvements with the ongoing maintenance and upgrades required to keep up with the demands of a growing student population?
