The art world is abuzz! President Donald Trump is taking center stage, hosting the 2025 Kennedy Center honorees, a move that's stirring up significant interest. This year's esteemed recipients, including the legendary Sylvester Stallone, music icons Gloria Gaynor and George Strait, the rock band Kiss, and the multi-talented Michael Crawford, are set to be celebrated in a way that marks a departure from tradition.
Trump's involvement signals a notable shift. During his first term, he largely distanced himself from the Kennedy Center and its prestigious awards. But here's where it gets controversial... Upon returning to office in January, the former president has implemented several changes, including replacing the board of trustees with GOP supporters. He's also openly voiced his critiques of the center's programming and aesthetic, vowing a complete overhaul.
The selection process for the honorees has also undergone a transformation. Trump, who claimed to be "about 98% involved" in choosing this year's recipients, personally announced them at the Kennedy Center. This contrasts with the previous, more bipartisan selection committee.
The schedule for the honorees includes a medal presentation ceremony at the White House, a departure from the traditional State Department dinner. The glitzy Kennedy Center Honors program, featuring tribute performances, is scheduled for Sunday and will be broadcast on CBS and Paramount+ in December. This year marks Trump's first attendance at the program as president, accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump.
And this is the part most people miss... While presidents typically attend the program, Trump is set to take on a more active role, potentially hosting the show. This has never happened before. "I've been asked to host. I said, ‘I’m the president of the United States. Are you fools asking me to do that?’” Trump said, referencing his White House chief of staff, Susie Wiles.
Trump's busy weekend also included his participation in the FIFA World Cup draw for 2026 and the acceptance of its inaugural peace prize. He also held a group meeting with the leaders of Canada and Mexico.
