Verizon Outage: What’s Happening & How It’s Affecting Customers Across the US (2026)

A recent outage affecting Verizon has left numerous customers struggling with disrupted voice and data services. This situation has led many users to report seeing "SOS" on their devices instead of the usual network signal bars. Some have even experienced difficulties accessing Verizon's own status page, likely due to a surge in traffic from concerned customers trying to check on the situation.

Reports from users, including those from Engadget's team, indicate that the primary issues seem to be centered around phone calls and wireless data access. While text messaging appears to be functioning normally for some, the overall connectivity remains problematic. According to DownDetector, which tracks service disruptions, reports of the Verizon outage began to escalate around noon Eastern Time, peaking at a staggering 181,769 reports at one point.

Interestingly, the outage is not isolated to Verizon alone; there were also minor spikes in outage reports from rival networks like AT&T and T-Mobile. However, these incidents are significantly less severe—AT&T recorded only 1,769 reports during the same timeframe. This discrepancy suggests that some of the AT&T users may have been attempting to reach Verizon customers, mistakenly believing their own service was at fault.

Verizon acknowledged the ongoing difficulties in a post on their official news account on X, stating, "We are aware of an issue impacting wireless voice and data services for some customers. Our engineers are engaged and are working to identify and solve the issue quickly. We understand how important reliable connectivity is and apologize for the inconvenience."

Looking at DownDetector's outage map, it appears that the problems are primarily affecting major urban centers in the eastern United States, with Boston, New York City, and Washington D.C. showing the highest concentrations of reports. There are also notable issues reported in cities like Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

As of 2:14 PM ET, Verizon reassured customers via X that its engineering teams were fully deployed to address the outage. However, they did not specify a timeline for resolution or detail how many customers were currently experiencing problems. Although reports on DownDetector began to decrease after peaking at 12:43 PM ET, thousands were still encountering service interruptions.

By 3:09 PM ET, Verizon had not released any further updates regarding the recovery efforts for its cellular network. Some customers indicated on X that their service seemed to be returning, but it remained unclear whether this signaled a complete resolution of the technical difficulties.

At 4:06 PM ET, nearly two hours after their last communication, members of Engadget's team confirmed that at least one person's service had been restored, but many others continued to face connectivity challenges. DownDetector noted more than 55,000 outage reports still pouring in as late as 3:47 PM ET.

Verizon tweeted again at 4:12 PM ET, confirming that work was still ongoing to resolve these issues, emphasizing that their teams were actively addressing the service disruptions. Meanwhile, both T-Mobile and AT&T have publicly stated that their networks remain unaffected by the troubles plaguing Verizon. T-Mobile confirmed that their operations were "normal and as expected," while AT&T quipped that for customers encountering issues, "it's not us...it's the other guys."

It's worth noting that this isn't the first time Verizon has faced significant service disruptions; a similar incident occurred back in September 2024, where customers struggled to make calls for several hours due to network issues.

This situation is evolving, and our team will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available.
